Hamburger Night....

So, now that the school year has started up again here in PNG….we are now able to go to Hamburger Night. 

 

Two Fridays ago, we went to our first Hamburger Night.  It is held at the Teen Center.  Some of the High Schoolers are employed there….they do all the cooking and the serving.  The menu includes hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken burgers, hot dogs, specialty salads, chips (which is what we now call french fries), assorted sodas and milkshakes!

 

The first Hamburger Night, I grabbed my food, kissed Caleb and Ben “good-bye” and headed to the WA Center with the girls from my Bible Study for a sleep over.  The WA Center is so cheap to rent here….and the beds are so comfortable!  It cost a total of $20 split 4 ways for the night!  It was so nice to just have a girls’ night away from our own homes and own families for a change!  Caleb and Ben stayed with the rest of the husbands and kids and enjoyed each others’ company.  The way the Teen Center is set up, the families with kids sit downstairs so the kids can just “go nuts”.  The singles and couples without kids get to go upstairs and eat in peace!  Both places to sit provide exactly what is needed for a much needed night out without having to cook!

 

Now…though the WA Center is cheap, Hamburger Night is not.  And, it can add up quickly.  That is what is so different here- the prices. Some things are SO cheap….like a room for the night ($20), babysitting ($5 for 3 hours!), fresh flowers (50 cents), fresh fruit and vegetables (cents…not even dollars), doctor’s visit ($5).  But, then other things are just crazy expensive: cereal ($10 for one box), chocolate chips ($6), chicken and mince (A LOT), ice cream that is not even good ($10 for a small carton), internet (pay per download), self-employment taxes, health insurance, a trip off center, renting a car, etc. 

 

That being the case, our friends (Ryan and Crystal) decided to host Hamburger Night at their house this past Friday Night.  Basically, we all brought our own meat and something to share….and the fun of Hamburger Night was created for about 1/3 of the cost.  Hope you enjoy the pictures!  I’m sure you can imagine how crazy it was….15 adults, 13 kids and a lot of food all crammed into a small missionary house!  Great memories!
