The Amazing Race- Part 1

March was a pretty busy month for me.  After I returned from the Senior Retreat, I participated in the first-ever Amazing Race: Ukarumpa Edition.

 

There is a couple here who really likes the show.  They took the time and energy and planned the entire event.  It was such a great time.  Hope you enjoy my recap of it over the next few posts….

 

I was on a team called SMACK.  Only 4 people could be on a team, so we actually had a team called SMACK 1 and SMACK 2.  We used the first letters of our names to come up with the name- Sarah, Melina, Maggie, Adrienne, Crystal, Carrie, Christy and Kristen. (Crystal came up with the name and we all LOVED it.)  Kristen asked her sister to mail iron on paper and t-shirts and they arrived the Wednesday before the race on Saturday.  Talk about cutting it close.  So, on the night before the race, we all met at Maggie’s house for carbo-loading (I had never heard of this before…..we all just brought food with lots of carbs) and to make our t-shirts and talk strategy.  Hey….we don’t have a lot of things to do around here, so we thought we would make the most of this event.

 

The first picture above was taken at our first challenge.  Isn’t the t-shirt fun?  One of our friends (Deb) couldn’t be there with us, so we all wrote her name on our arms, honoring her as an honorary member.  The purple ribbons in my hair differentiate my team from the other SMACK team.  The ladies on my team:  Maggie, Me, Crystal and Kristen.  In the second picture, we are the ones on the left (back two on the left and front two on the left).  The silly hats were just to “intimidate” the other players.  They weren’t really practical once the race began.

 

There were a total of 20 teams in the race!  The first half would start at 9:00am and the second half at 9:15am.  At the end of the race, the totally time would be added up, including penalties, to give the top placed teams.  Needless to say, we were pumped!  We were so excited, we were really annoying. J

 

Our first clue said something about boats, so we (mistakenly) assumed that we were supposed to go to the house of the one person on center who owns a boat.  We were so sad to see that we were wrong!  But, all was not lost, on our way to the boat, we saw another pit stop and made a mental note to come back to it later.  We realized our mistake and headed off to a house where a family by the name of Dokken (like boat “docking”) lives.  When we got to the pit stop, we had to choose the person who “sucked the most.” Turns out that person had to suck Jell-o through a straw.  We all cheered our teammate Maggie on. She did great!

 

You’ll notice in the pictures above that there is one with a coaster bus.  After my obsession with the coaster bus on the senior retreat, I was THRILLED to hear that one of our friends rented the bus for the race.  All of our husbands and kids piled into the bus and followed us from pit stop to pit stop.  After Maggie finished sucking the Jell-o, we read the next clue and told them where we would be.  The bus sometimes followed our team around and at other times followed the other SMACK 2 team.  It was so great to have so many fans.
